Silica powder is composed of very small crystalline particles up to 150 micrometers in diameter. More precisely, it can be considered as a by-product of the process of high-purity quartz thermal reduction with carbon materials such as coke and coal (used in the production of silicon alloys).

Silica Flour production process

The production of Silica powder is done in a three-step process, which are mentioned below.

Application of Silica Flour

Silica Flour or Silicon dioxide has a variety of applications, including:

  • Used as and cleaning products
  • Additives for soap, toothpaste and paint
  • Filling and reinforcing rubber, plastic, paper and road surface materials (asphalt)
  • Used in pharmaceutical products
  • Used in casting and glass production
  • For the production of ceramics, tiles, porcelain and clay
  • Used in making bricks, concrete and cement
  • Production of cosmetics and skin care products
  • To increase the cement strength of oil wells (in combination with refractory cement)

Application of Silica Flour in Oil, Gas and Geothermal Wells

The first application of Silica Flour is in cementing slurries of high-temperature oil, gas and geothermal wells in order to increase the resistance and strength of the set cement inside drilled wellbores and minimize the cement’s permeability -which is excellent for reducing possibility of gas-channeling inside the cemented wellbore. The second application of Silica Flour is lowering low shear viscosity of cement slurry and ease of the cement pumping through wellbore. Besides that, studies have shown that Silica flour improves the heat tolerance of cement slurries above temperatures of 110 ° C (230 °F), which make it a perfect additive to be used in the cementing stage of drilling wells, in order to minimize the possibility of any cement failure inside high-temperature/High-pressure zones.

In overall, Silica Flour is a high-performance additive which is ideal for improving on both thermal and mechanical properties of the cement slurries, and reducing the cost and the risk of cementing operations.


Application of Silica Flour in glass production

Silica Flour is the most important raw material in glass formulation and production. Although different materials are used in the production of glass, but the Silica in the production of glass makes up more than 70% of its weight. The chemical purity of the Silica powder used in the production of glass determines the following glass production:

Application of Silica Flour in the production of construction materials and ceramics

Silica Flour is one of the main materials for the production of refractory objects in construction materials such as bricks and ceramics. Due to the high resistance of Silica to heat and high pressure, the addition of Silica powder in ceramic brick and mortar compositions makes them more resistant to pressure. It also makes them resistant to temperatures up to about 1700 ° C. In addition, Silica Flour has other important advantages in the production of ceramics, which are:
